'Lunchbox' co-producer Shahnaab Alam speaking during an Open Forum on the topic Prospects and Problems of Regional Cinema on October 31 at GIFF

‘Lunchbox’ producer Shahnaab Alam who attended the first Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) on Tuesday said that co-productions can help to get good markets for any regional films.

Speaking on the topic ‘Prospects and problems of regional cinema’ Alam said that at the present scenario any good film can be sent to the viewers irrespective of the language and the region of the film.

On joint productions, he said that his film ‘Lunchbox’ got the benefit of having French and German producers in the unit.

“It helps to get a wider publicity of the film. When we got producers from France and Germany, it was a boost for us in their country. That way we can increase the reach of our films globally,” said Alam.

Alam who is producing Jahnu Barua’s next film ‘Broken Window’ all the three pillars of films need to work jointly to make a film success. “Not just creative people in the film but the distributors as well need to join hands together and work for the film. Besides, the quality is must. Everybody would like to watch a good film,” he added.

He also said that at the present age with forums like Netflix, YouTube and other digital mediums, film reach to the viewers across the globe.

“See, there are good number of Assamese people in various parts of India and be it in the UK or the USA. These people who are residing outside would obviously won’t mind paying 10 pound or similar amount to watch a good Assamese film. That’s how it can be worked out,” said Alam.

The first GIFF being organized by the state government owned Jyoti Chitraban (Film Studio) Society in association with Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute (DBHRGFTA). It started on October 28 and will continue till November 2. More than 80 films are being screened at the festival from over 32 countries.
