The Guwahati Municipal Corporation announced the start of Swachh Survekshan 2018 at an inaugural function held at Gauhati Town Club on Thursday.

The Central government is conducting Swachh Survekshan 2018 as a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (urban) to encourage cities to improve their urban sanitation.  The objective of Swachh Survekshan is to encourage large scale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a cleaner and better place to live in.

Speaking on the occasion, GMC commissioner Monalisa Goswami said, “We have been taking several initiatives to make Guwahati clean. With the help of the Swachhata App, citizens can register their complaints. The authorities will immediately look into it within a specified time frame. Also, with the use of Google toilet locator, now locals and tourists in Guwahati can locate toilets.”

At the function, attended by actors Sagarika Goswami and Kopil Bora, it was also announced that a city-based survey will be conducted by Guwahati Municipal Corporation to assess the cleanest school, hotel, hospital, market association and resident welfare association (RWA) in the city and recognize the winners. “Tuesdays and Fridays are kept to segregate dry and wet waste. For this, 58 NGOs are appointed and divided in various areas for different works related to cleanliness. We request the members of the society and residents to spread the word amongst general public so that Guwahati stands as a top clean city amongst other cities in the country,” GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said.

Actor Kopil Bora, who was introduced as the Brand Ambassadors for Swachh Survekshan 2018, said, “I am glad to be a part of this initiative. From my end, I shall support and promote Swachhata in all the way I can.”
