Congress candidate Miani D Shira, daughter of former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, won the by-election for the Ampati assembly seat.

The by-election was held on May 28 after the seat was vacated by Mukul Sangma who won from both Ampati and Songsak seats in the last Assembly elections.

Twenty-seven year old Miani won the by-election by defeating the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Clement G Momin by 3191 votes.

Miani’s victory margin however pales in comparison to the margin by which her father had won the last elections where he defeated BJP candidate Bakul Ch Hajong by 8104 votes.

With Miani’s victory, the opposition Congress has increased its strength to 21 MLAs in the 60-member house, edging out the NPP which has 20 MLAs.
