Former NorthEast United FC player Nicolas Velez will not join the Highlanders, at least for this season of the Indian Super League.

The NorthEast United FC fans, since long, have been asking the management for signing the former Highlander. The social media handles of Nicolas Velez were full with requests made by the Highlander fans asking him to rejoin the club.

Earlier, Velez posted a message on Facebook informing the NEUFC fans that he will not be joining the club anytime soon. “To all the fans who ask about the chance to go back to NEUFC, first of all I want to thank you all for your love and support. At the same time I want to let you know that my future is not in the club at the moment,” the Argentine forward wrote.

Responding to the message, many football fans from India expressed their ‘sadness’ as they will not be able to witness their “most-loved Highlander” take the field in the Indian Super League soon.

Velez played for the NorthEast United FC in the 2015 and 2016 seasons of the Indian Super League. He scored 8 goals for the Highlanders making him one of the top performers in the short history of the Guwahati-based club. Velez is currently playing for Primeira Liga side Belenenses.

Meanwhile on Friday, NorthEast United FC announced the signing of Greek-German attacking midfielder Panagiotis Triadis on a direct transfer from Apollon Smyrnis Football Club as the ISL teams are getting ready for the second phase of the Indian Super League season which begins from January 25. The mid-season transfer window closes on January 31.

The valued signing marks the first direct transfer between a Greek Super League Club and an Indian Super League club. Triadis has represented the German national team from U15 to U17 levels and Greece national team for the U19 level.

NorthEast United FC are currently placed fourth in the league table with 20 points.
