The state governments in Assam, Manipur and other Northeast states have ‘urgently’ called upon those people from the region who recently attended a religious congregation at Nizamuddin in Delhi, to report to the nearby government hospitals immediately, after reports came in that many people attending the congregation showed COVID-19 positive symptoms.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain on March 31 said that 24 people have been found Coronavirus positive in the Nizamuddin Markaz that has turned into ground zero of the new cases spiraling out of control following an ijtima in mid-March.

On March 31, Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked the people who may have attended the event to voluntarily visit their nearest government hospital or call the helpline number 104 for immediate help. “Urgent Request… If there is anyone from Assam who attended the religious congregation of Tablighi Jamaat at Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi, please IMMEDIATELY report voluntarily to the nearest government hospital or by calling Helpline no # 104. Please treat this as very important,” the minister tweeted.

Sarma added that the government has a list of 299 people from Assam who were present near the “hotspot”.  “Assam govt is now in possession of a list of 299 persons who were present in and around the hotspot near Nizamuddin Dargah. We’ve alerted dist admins to find out if these people have returned to Assam, and strict instructions issued to quarantine them if they are in the state,” Sarma tweeted.

Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh has also asked the people from his state to inform the local hospitals or call the helpline number. “Urgent!!! If there is anyone from Manipur who attended the religious congregation of #TablighiJamaat at Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi, kindly report immediately to the nearest govt. hospital or by calling Toll Free no 1800-345-3818,” Singh tweeted.

It came to light on March 30 that many people who attended the conference organized by Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi Nizamuddin area this month were tested COVID-19 positive after their return to their respective states. According to reports, a total of 16 persons who had attended the conference in Delhi have tested positive for Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu. Many cases were also reported from Telangana as well where 6 deaths were linked to the conference.

Assam has till now not reported any COVID-19 positive case.
