The total number of active COVID-19 cases in Assam crossed the 1,000 mark on May 30, with 159 new cases pushing the overall tally to 1216 in the state.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that among the new cases, 20 are air travellers and 29 have been detected at different laboratories and the districts are yet to be confirmed, the minister said.

Altogether 26 are from Kokrajhar and Chirang, 20 from Hailakandi, 13 each from Kamrup and Dibrugarh, and 11 from Morigaon.

Nine have been detected in Jorhat, seven in Golaghat, five in Dhubri, three in Barpeta, two in Cachar and one in Bongaigaon.

The new cases have taken the number of active cases to 1046, the first instance of active cases crossing the 1000 figure in any of the Northeast states.

Meanwhile, 38 patients were discharged from different hospitals on May 30, taking the total number of recovery to 163.

The state has been witnessing a massive spike in COVID-19 tally, with highest number of new cases in a single day – 177 cases – detected on May 29.

The number of cases has doubled since May 25, when the 500-mark was reached, to cross 1000 on May 29.

The state has reported four COVID-related death so far.
