Tripura government has requested Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to resume local DEMU train service in the state at the earliest possible to restore smooth travel of the people within the state.
The passenger train service has been suspended since March 24 because of lockdown along with the rest of the country. Recently, some Shramik special trains were operated up to Agartala to evacuate stranded persons but normal train movement was not started yet.
Since lockdown has been lifted, the state government has requested the NFR to resume DEMU train service from Dharmanagar to Agartala and Agartala to Sabroom for the interest of the people as early as possible, said government spokesperson Ratan Lal Nath.
He mentioned that Tripura government has managed the COVID-19 situation fighting against several odds and as a result, community-level transmission of the disease was not reported in the state as of now.
Nath added that the Tripura government has paid Rs 2.91 crore for bringing back about 34,000 stranded people of the state and sending 29,000 people to other states.
“Tripura is the only state which paid for travel to its citizens and sending the migrants. Also, the government paid Rs 4.19 crore to the stranded people of the state in other parts of the country during lockdown. Now, we have come to a comfortable position to deal with COVID-19 cases and so far our strategies are working well in the situation. So, we want to start normal life gradually,” Nath added.
