Activist Sharjeel Imam, facing sedition charges, has been detected with COVID-19 at the Guwahati Central Jail, reports said on July 21.

Official sources confirmed news agency UNI that Sharjeel is among the inmates detected with the virus.

Sharjeel was brought to Guwahati from New Delhi on February 20 and has since been lodged at the central jail in Guwahati.

He is facing charges of delivering anti-Assam speeches at the Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA agitation, allegedly calling on the people to cut-off Assam from rest of the country.

He is also facing similar sedition and other charges, and was arrested on January 28 by a Delhi police team.

More than 300 other inmates of Guwahati Central Jail, besides several inmates of Golaghat and Nagaon jails, have been detected with COVID-19 in the state.

The Assam Human Rights Commission has asked the chief secretary and the IGP (Prisons) to submit a report on allegations of non-compliance of COVID-19 protocols in the state prisons.
