Flood affects hundreds of people in two districts in Assam

The flood situation in Assam remained unchanged even as the death toll mounted to 35 in the first wave of floods in the state.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin on July 3 informed that one person died in Dhubri district in the last 24 hours, taking the overall toll to 35.

The number of affected population decreased marginally, with 13,26,815 people still remaining affected in 20 districts of the state.

As many as 49 revenue circles and 1636 villages and localities were also still reeling under floods, while 67,628 hectares of crop land were under waters.

Altogether 92 relief camps were operational in the affected districts, sheltering over 11,000 people. Another 64 relief distribution camps were also functioning.

Parts of Kaziranga National Park and Orang National Park also remained affected by floods.

Among the major rivers flowing above the danger level were Brahmaputra at Jorhat and Dhubri, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Kopili in Nagaon and Beki in Barpeta.

PM Modi Takes Stock Of Flood & COVID-19 Situation In Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic interaction with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on July 3 and took stock of the latest flood and erosion and COVID-19 situation in the state.

During the talk, Sonowal apprised the prime minister about the havoc wrought by the latest wave of floods, which has submerged vast tract of agricultural land in the state and crippled normal life.

He informed that several districts are reeling under flood and this has caused huge damages to crops and disrupted communication network in different parts.

Besides, erosion and landslides have also severely impacted the state and claimed several lives, the chief minister said.

Sonowal also informed the PM about the relief and rehabilitation measures being made for the marooned people and engagement of NDRF as well SDRF personnel in rescue operations.
