Twenty-seven more persons were tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on August 11, taking active cases up to 626, while 12 more persons recovered from the viral infection, totalling recoveries to 510.

Director of health services, Aman War said that over 75 health workers in Meghalaya have contracted the virus so far with two more staff nurses and one Ayush doctor having COVID-19 duties at Shillong Civil Hospital, tested positive for the viral infection.

Of the 27 new cases, War said eight, including a staff nurse and a contact person at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), an Ayush doctor having COVID-19 duties at Shillong Civil Hospital, a tourist taxi driver, two CRPF personnel, one BSF trooper and one armed force personnel, were from East Khasi Hills district.

He said, seven new cases all that of BSF were detected in West Garo Hills and eight civilians, including six from the CMJ Breweries, Byrnihat, a forest guard and another is a contact of a forest guard in Ri-Bhoi district bordering Assam’s Kamrup district, were infected with the viral flu.

War said a staff nurse in Norman Tunnel Hospital in West Jaintia Hills, besides two returnees from West Bengal in North Garo Hills have also been infected with the virus.

South West Khasi Hills district has recorded its first positive case of COVID-19 after a returnee from Gujarat tested positive for the viral infection on August 10.

On the other hand, 12 persons, including six civilians, four BSF and one armed force personnel recovered in East Khasi Hills and another person recovered in West Khasi Hills today, the senior medical official said.

“We are setting up more corona care centres. All the asymptomatic cases that can be taken care of at home, we advise that they be taken care of at home from now onwards,” War said.

Maintaining that the transmission chain that emerged from a wedding party at Greenwood Resort in Khanapara, Assam has been cut, War said, “No positive cases from the wedding incident. We are very hopeful that this chain is broken”.

With 425 (268 civilians, 88 BSF and 69 armed forces personnel from Assam Rifles and Army), East Khasi Hills is the most affected district in the state followed by Ri-Bhoi with 93 cases and 72 in West Garo Hills.

In other districts, West Jaintia Hills has 16 cases, six in East Jaintia Hills, five in West Khasi Hills, one in South West Khasi Hills, four in North Garo Hills, besides two each in South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.

Meghalaya recorded 1,142 positive COVID-19 cases that include 626 active, six deaths and 510 recoveries so far from the viral infection.
