Kolkata-resident Garga Chatterjee, who allegedly made derogatory remarks against the first Ahom king Chaolong Sukapha, has offered ‘unconditional apology’ to the people of Assam for his remarks.
Chatterjee, who heads an organization called Bangla Pokkho, also sent an apology letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
“Please accept my unconditional apology. From the core of my heart, I apologize unconditionally to all the people of Assam including the Tai Ahom community through Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for any social media post by me that may have unintentionally hurt anyone’s sentiment,” Chatterjee said in a video.
He also mentioned his “deepest respect for Swargadeo Sukapha’s exemplary role as an architect of Bor Axom”.
“In future, I will never make any social media post that may hurt the sentiments of Assam,” he said.
Chatterjee on June 17 had tweeted: “Why does @sarbanandsonwal regularly celebrate a Chinese invader and his invading army? Why does banned separatist group ULFA also celebrate the Chinese invader? Do real Indians know that Indian tax money is being used by BJP in Assam to put up statues of a Chinese invader?”
This led to the controversy following which CM Sarbananda Sonowal directed Guwahati Police Commissioner to arrest and bring Chatterjee to Assam.
A lower court in Guwahati, also had issued a warrant of arrest against Chatterjee, a day after Assam Police failed to arrest him and returned empty handed from Kolkata.
