Former Assam DIG PK Dutta in police custody

Former Assam Police DIG, PK Dutta, an alleged mastermind of police recruitment exam scam who was detained at the India-Nepal border on October 6, was remanded in six days CID custody by a local court in Guwahati on October 7.

Dutta, who was shown as arrested by the CID, Assam Police, on October 7 morning after his arrival in Guwahati, was produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Guwahati.

The CID sought seven days remand, but the court forwarded Dutta to six days remand of the CID.

Dutta’s health check-up, including COVID-19 test, was conducted at the MMC Hospital in Guwahati before being produced in the court.

The former top cop was accompanied by his son and son-in-law. He was detained by the border security personnel along the Nepal border on October 6 while reportedly trying to return to India after having escaped when the scam had come to light last month.

The CID, Assam Police, had issued a look out notice against Dutta. He was handed over to West Bengal Police, and a team of Assam Police, led by Kokrajhar superintendent of police, had travelled to West Bengal on October 6 to take him over.

Kokrajhar SP handed Dutta to another Assam Police team, led by ADGP GP Singh, at Kokrajhar late on October 6 night and was then brought to Guwahati by road with the team reaching CID headquarter in Guwahati in the wee hours on October 7.

Dutta is among the prime accused in the scam pertaining to leak of question paper for recruitment of sub-inspectors of Assam Police which was scheduled on September 22.

The examination was cancelled and has now been re-scheduled for November.

Another suspected mastermind, Diban Deka, a ruling BJP leader, has also been arrested, along with 20 other accused, including candidates.

The CID, Crime Branch of Guwahati Police and other district police have registered separate cases into the scam.
