Workers prepare a COVID Care Centre at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati

Assam government is constructing a temporary hospital at Khanapara ground in Guwahati for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 23 inspected the site and informed that the 750-bed temporary hospital will include a 200-bed ICU.

“A 750-bed temporary hospital including 200-bed ICU is being set-up at Khanapara field for treatment of #COVID patients. Inspected sites with officials of Health Dept & PWD today and asked for work to be expedited,” he said.

The minister further informed that a 400-bed COVID Care Centre is getting ready at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati.

“Isolation and management of #COVID19 patients are key to their faster recovery, as was effectively done last year by our doctors & paramedic teams. We’re again setting up the Sarusajai facility with a 400-bed Covid Care Centre. Visited the site today,” Sarma tweeted.

A temporary hospital was constructed at the Khanapara Veterinary ground last year but was dismantled after active cases decreased in the state.

Earlier during the Assam election campaign, the Khanapara ground was used as a temporary helipad.

On April 22, Assam reported 1931 fresh cases with 680 of them from the Kamrup Metro district. The state now has 10,571 active cases.
