Lockdown in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, which comprises capital city of Shillong, was extended till June 14 in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the district.
In view of the “continuous large numbers of COVID-19 cases” being detected in the district, and hospital bed occupancy nearing saturation, district magistrate Isawanda Laloo on June 5 extended the ongoing curfew in the district till 5 am on June 14.
Meghalaya on June 5 reported nine deaths due to COVID-19 while the state detected 497 fresh cases of the viral infection. The total death count in the state went up to 652 while there were 5797 active cases on June 5.
The state reported 801 recoveries from the viral infection.
Director Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said that COVID-19 related deaths included seven in East Khasi Hills district and one each in Ri- Bhoi district and West Jaintia Hills district.
Inter-district movement not permitted
East Khasi Hills district magistrate Isawanda Laloo mentioned that inter-district movements are not allowed and people should stay indoors. “Inter-district movement of persons is not permitted. No person is to step out without valid reasons. Vehicles plying without passes will be liable for strict penalties. Any one in defiance of orders is liable for arrest,” the district magistrate warned.
Opening of essential shops would be regulated as per office order and in-situ construction works for government and private projects that do not involve movement of labour are permitted, with due permission from the office of the deputy commissioner, East Khasi Hills district.
“Political, public, social and religious gatherings including conferences, meetings and trainings, weddings and sporting activities are not permitted,” the order specified.
