Assam cabinet has recommended against conducting examinations of class X and XII in the state in view of the prevailing positivity rate of COVID-19.
The final decision, however, would be taken on June 18 at a meeting where the education department will sit with the various stakeholders including the students’ organisations.
State health minister Keshab Mahanta said that in the last two months 14.8 percent of the COVID-infected persons were in the under-18 age group.
“In the period, around 25,000 individuals in the age group 11-18 were infected by the virus and it accounted for 10 percent of the total infections in the state. In such a scenario, it is not possible to conduct the exams,” said Mahanta.
The High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) and Higher Secondary exam conducted by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) were scheduled to be conducted from May but were postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
Earlier this month, state education Ranoj Pegu had hinted that the exams will likely be conducted between August 1 and 15 following a meeting with different stakeholders.
