Former Meghalaya legislator, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, who is currently convener of Revolution Ïada La Ka Ri, on July 12 criticised Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for saying that the origin of the Christian and Muslim population in India is Hindu.
“The statement of CM Sarma that Muslims and Christians were Hindus, is misleading and contrary to facts,” he said.
“It not only confirms the motive of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but also reveals Himanta Biswa Sarma‘s shallow understanding of the religious and cultural practices of the tribal people of the Northeast states. I would also like to remind CM Sarma that tribals are neither Hindus nor Muslims. This had been clarified very clearly during the debates in the constituent assembly,” he said.
The former Meghalaya legislator shared an excerpt from what had been stated in the constituent assembly by tribal leader Reverend JJ M Nichols Roy about the cultural practices of the tribal people in the Northeast.
“Rev JJM Nichols Roy in his submission to the constituent assembly, made it amply clear that tribals are neither Hindus nor Muslims,” Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said in the media statement.
