After the declaration of the results of the Manipur assembly election on March 10, there were a series of violent incidents including destruction of properties in the district.

With tension among the people of the district running high, the district administration promulgated indefinite curfew, restricting people moving out of their homes under section 144 (1) of CrPC 1973 with immediate effect from 4 pm on March 11.

Even after the curfew, anti-social elements were using social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting passions of the public.

“The social media has also become a handy tool for rumour mongers and was being used to incite the general public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the district,” the Manipur home department stated.
