The education department (school) of Manipur has banned conduct of school excursions with immediate effect till January 10, 2023, soon after the tragic accident that killed several students of a school on excursion in Manipur’s Noney district.

An order of director L Nandakumar of education (s) said that the department is in receipt of reports of school children going for school excursion and meeting with accidents in the morning fog/mist of this winter.

While banning the conduct of the excursion by the schools, the order directed to all heads of all government, government aided and private unaided schools in the state not to organize or conduct school excursion till January 10, 2023 with immediate effect.

The ban was to avoid any untoward incidents, the order stated.

While directing heads of institutions to comply with the instruction, the order cautioned that any untoward incidents failing to abide by the order, the responsibility will lie with the principal, headmasters and headmistress concerned.

The order came up after at least eight persons including six students (all girls) were killed and over 33 injured after a bus in which students of a school were on excursion rolled down a hill in Manipur’s Noney district on December 21.

The mishap took place in the Longsai area along Old Cachar Road around when the bus driver apparently lost control over the bus amid mist of the winter.
