Among the popular day-long getaways from Guwahati city is the Chandubi Lake, located in the Kamrup district of Assam.

Chandubi Lake is a natural freshwater lake which is a popular tourist destination. The lake, located around 60 km from Guwahati, is surrounded by lush green forests and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

The lake was formed as a result of a massive earthquake that occurred in the region in the late 19th century. The earthquake caused a huge depression on the earth’s surface, which later filled with water to form the lake.

One of the main attractions of Chandubi Lake is its peaceful and serene atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely boat ride on the lake or go for a walk along its banks, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding forests. The lake is also a popular spot for birdwatching, as it is home to a variety of migratory and resident bird species.

In addition to its natural beauty, Chandubi Lake also has a rich cultural significance for the local community. The lake is considered to be sacred by the indigenous people of the region, and there are several legends and myths associated with it.

Despite its popularity and cultural importance, Chandubi Lake faces several challenges. One of the main issues is the pollution of the lake due to the dumping of waste. This has led to the degradation of the lake’s water quality.

To address these issues, the government and the local population – especially the Rabha community – have taken several steps, including implementation of waste management policies. There are also several conservation efforts underway to protect the lake and its surroundings.

Despite these efforts, much work still needs to be done to ensure the long-term sustainability of Chandubi Lake. It is important that all stakeholders, including the government, local communities, and tourists, work together to preserve this natural treasure for future generations.

A beautiful and culturally significant natural destination, Chandubi Lake is a must-visit for tourists visiting the Kamrup district of Assam. While it faces challenges such as pollution, there are efforts underway to protect and preserve the lake for the benefit of all.

From January 1-5, 2023, the Chandubi Festival was held near the lake attracting tourists from far and near. The Chandubi Festival, which aims to promote the bio-diversity and ecology of South Kamrup, featured traditional sports, ethnic foods, cultural programmes, an exhibition of ethnic crafts etc.
