The Google News Initiative has partnered with DataLEADS to host a series of day-long training workshops in India called the ‘Data Dialogue’. These workshops are aimed at increasing data literacy in newsrooms and helping journalists learn the tools and techniques of data collection, verification, and visualization.

The workshops are open to media educators and students as well.

The Data Dialogue workshop series will be held in various locations across India, with one of the workshops scheduled to take place in Guwahati on January 18.

These workshops provide a valuable opportunity for journalists and media professionals to improve their skills and knowledge in data journalism, which is becoming increasingly important in today’s digital age.

“As part of our commitment to help journalists in India strengthen their digital skills, the Google News Initiative, in partnership with DataLEADS, is thrilled to open registration for Data Dialogue, a pan-India data journalism training series that will be held in 20 cities across India in English and 10 Indian languages beginning December 2022,” said a statement from Google News Initiative.

The Data Dialogue workshop series is just one of the many initiatives that the Google News Initiative is undertaking to support and strengthen the media ecosystem around the world. By providing resources and training to journalists, the initiative aims to promote accurate and reliable journalism that serves the public interest.

The sessions will be led by data journalism experts and trainers from the GNI India Training Network and will focus on four key areas: data sourcing, cleaning, visualization and verification. Tools covered will include Google Trends, Google Sheet, Flourish and many others including Pinpoint, a research tool part of Google Journalist Studio that empowers journalists to explore and analyze thousands of documents and files in multiple formats.
