Two prisoners, including a hardcore NSCN (K) Nikki Sumi faction militant, have escaped from the Khonsa jail in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on March 26  evening after shooting an on-duty sentry through the latter’s service rifle after snatching it from him, a senior police officer said.

The escapees have been identified as Roksen Homcha Lowang of NSCN (K-NS) and Titpu Kitnya, a convict, Arunachal Pradesh Police (APP) PRO Rohit Rajbir Singh said.

“Accused Roksen Homcha Lowang of NSCN (K-NS) and another convict namely Titpu Kitnya snatched the service AK-47 rifle from constable Wangniam Bosai of 1st IRBn, Khonsa and then fired upon him around 5 pm today and then both escaped from UTP Cell, Khonsa,” Singh, also the SP (SIT), said.

“Constable Bosai attained martyrdom while being shifted to Dibrugarh for medical intervention,” he said.

Legal proceedings have been initiated, and a manhunt is on to locate the escaped prisoners, the SP said.

The snatched AK-47 was taken away by the prisoners, he added.
