The Congress party in Manipur, while strongly reacting to chief minister N Biren Singh’s statement after meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah, demanded that the chief minister should resign on moral ground.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Imphal on June 26, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president, Kh Devabratta strongly reacted to the chief minister’s statement which said that the law and order in the hill districts will be handled by the Union home minister and those of the valley by the chief minister who is also in-charge of the home department.
The MPCC working president said that the Congress party and the people could not accept the “partition of the administration” in the state.
He said that N Biren Singh is the chief minister of the whole state. He became the chief minister of the state after the people of the state gave a mandate to his party with absolute majority, the Congress leader also said.
The government formed by people’s mandate is still in power in the state. The chief minister is still the head of the whole state, he added.
“Then, how come such a government could look after the affairs of only a part of the state?” he asked.
“Was there any such arrangement in other states of the country when such a disaster hit the state?,” he further questioned. “Many states of the country were hit by communal violence but such a separate administrative arrangement was not made,” he pointed out.
“The chief minister’s statement hinted that he could not administer the whole of the state. If he cannot administer the state irrespective of the hills and the plain, N Biren Singh should resign as chief minister of the state”, the Congress leader demanded.
