Overjoyed at getting selected for the senior national cricket team, Assam’s Uma Chetry said she wants to continue her good work and wished that she would be getting the love and support from the people of the state.

“It feels great to be selected for the national team. I just can’t express my feelings in words. I’m overwhelmed with the love of the people of Assam. I hope this love will continue so that I can keep performing,” said Uma Chetry on July 3.

Earlier on July 2, she became the first ever player (irrespective of any gender) from Assam to be selected for the senior national cricket team.

Assam Cricket Association (ACA) termed it historic and on July 3 they felicitated the wicket-keeper batter from Bokakhat. The apex cricket body rewarded Uma with Rs 5 lakh for the feat.

Uma also thanked Assam Cricket Association and Bokakhat Cricket Association for their immense support in her journey.

ACA president Taranga Gogoi congratulated Uma for her achievement and said it will motivate hundreds of others to do their best.

“We are extremely glad and happy with this development. I hope this will open up a new road for our boys and girls in the coming days. I’m sure in future, we will have more players who will go on to represent India,” Taranga Gogoi said.

Uma Chetry will accompany the senior national team to Bangladesh for the upcoming tour.

Uma has been named for both T20 and ODI matches. The side will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur. They will play three T20s and an equal number of ODIs.

The 20-year-old wicket-keeper batter recently was a part of the India A team that won the Asia Emerging Cricket Tournament in Hong Kong. In the two matches India got to play, Uma played a crucial role both as a batter and behind the stumps.
