Primary schools opened amid clashes in Manipur

Manipur government opened educational institutes in the state for the primary level class 1 to 8 from July 5.

Only a few students turned up in most of the schools as many families have been displaced by the 2 month-long conflict.

Chief minister N Biren Singh said: “As we opened the schools from ( Class 1- Class 8 ) today, I’m happy to see our children back in school. It’s been a difficult phase for the people of Manipur but we can’t let our children be deprived of their rightful education.”

He seek the cooperation of everyone in Manipur to maintain peace and enable children attend school without any disturbances. Many schools could not be opened as they were occupied by security personnel. Over 40,000 troops who rushed to the state after clashes started on May 3 were stationed in school premises. Higher level schools could not be opened until the educational institutes were vacated.

Police said reports of intermittent exchange of fire between unknown miscreants took place at the hill range above Langza village near Khoijumantabi since July 4.

On July 5, firing between unknown armed miscreants was also reported at Luwangshangol /Phaileng area, adjoining Imphal-West and Kangpokpi districts. Central forces intervened and controlled the situation.

Four bunkers were destroyed in Kangpokpi, Imphal West and Churachandpur districts by a combined team of Manipur police and central security forces. Other districts are also destroying the bunkers built in the fringe area.

Police also detained 250 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the state.

Police said a militant was also apprehended on July 5 at Imphal-East.
