Uma Chetry

Cricketer Uma Chetry became the first from Assam to get selected for the senior national team when she was named for the teams for upcoming Bangladesh tour.

Uma has been named for both T20 and ODI matches. The side will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur. They will play three T20s and an equal number of ODIs.

A wicket-keeper batter from Assam’s Bokakhat recently was a part of the India A team that won the Asia Emerging Cricket Tournament in Hong Kong. In the two matches India got to play, Uma played a crucial role both as a batter and behind the stumps.

Former Assam Ranji player and women’s team’s fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh who observed Uma closely termed her as a ‘fearless cricketer’. Subhadeep also predicted a bright future for Uma.

Cricket in Assam:

Earlier, several cricketers mostly men, starting from Rajesh Borah to Zaved Zaman, several players represented India in the age group tournaments or in the A teams. Some of them went very near but no one ever could cross the hurdle.

Apart from Rajesh Bora and Zaved Zaman, Gautam Dutta played brilliantly to be called for the national side. But he too failed.

Riyan Parag, Abu Nechim Ahmed, Mrigen Talukdar, Palash Jyoti Das have represented India in several age group tournaments.

But on July 2, Uma Chetry became the first from Assam to be selected for any Indian senior cricket team.
