ANI Photo | Assam govt will take decision on polygamy ban law: Expert panel member after report submission

The expert committee submitted its report today to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, recommending the enactment of a law to end polygamy in the state. The committee was formed by CM Sarma to assess the legislative competence of the State Legislature to enact such a law.

The committee, headed by Justice (Retd.) Rumi Phukan as Chairman, consisted of three other members: Advocate General of Assam Devajit Saikia, Nalin Kahil Additional Advocate General of Assam, and Advocate Nekibur Zaman.

Advocate Nekibur Zaman confirmed the submission of the report and stated that they have mentioned the relevant constitutional and Supreme Court provisions in their findings. The committee had met four times to conduct its examination before preparing the report.

Upon receiving the report, CM Sarma expressed his optimism about creating a positive ecosystem for women’s empowerment, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion in the state. In May of the same year, the state government established the four-member committee to examine the legality of ending polygamy in Assam.

Now, the government will review the committee’s report and decide on further steps to address the issue of polygamy in the state.
