Physical classes in schools in Dimapur and Niuland districts of Nagaland have been suspended from August 21 due to increasing cases of conjunctivitis (eye flu).
The district administrations ordered the schools to remain closed for offline classes till August 26 in response to the increasing cases of conjunctivitis in the two districts, particularly among school-going children.
An official statement said: “After extensive discussions with officials from the department of health and family welfare and the department of school education, considering the seriousness of the infection’s spread and the rising number of cases, it was decided that physical classes in schools will be suspended from August 21, 2023, to August 26, 2023, to contain the spread of infection among students.”
In addition to the suspension of physical classes, the school authorities have been requested to explore alternative educational options during this period, the statement said.
“Specifically, they are encouraged to consider implementing online classes to ensure that students can continue their education while maintaining their safety,” it added.
This decision has been made with the health and well-being of the students and the community in mind, the statement also said.
Conjunctivitis Cases increasing in Meghalaya
Cases of acute conjunctivitis has been steadily rising in Meghalaya, prompting medical authorities to issue advisory to the public.
Health officials said so far 1,324 cases of conjunctivitis have been reported in the state with East Khasi Hills district, which includes Meghalaya capital Shillong, reporting 672 conjunctivitis cases district “in the past couple of months”.
