MPCC observes 81st anniversary of Quit India Movement in Imphal on August 9

Former Manipur chief minister and senior Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh on August 9 said that convening an emergency session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is a must in the context of the prevailing crisis in the state.

The former three-time chief minister of Manipur was talking to reporters on the sideline of the observance of the 81st anniversary of Quit India Movement held at Congress Bhavan in Imphal.

He said that considering the importance of convening an emergency session of the state assembly, the Congress along with other 10 like-minded political parties have been pressing the governor as well as the state government to have an assembly session.

The proposed emergency should discuss the crisis unfolding in the state and find a way to end it while adopting a unanimous resolution to end the crisis, Ibobi said.

Ibobi Singh then expected that submitting a resolution that would be passed by the emergency session of the state assembly will give a great impact to end the crisis.

“It is a strong belief of the Congress that furnishing a resolution that would be passed by the emergency session to the Parliament will have a positive impact,” he also said.

A recent cabinet meeting convened by chief minister N Biren Singh resolved to recommend the governor to convene the state assembly session on August 21.

The former chief minister then said that the state government must try its best to present all the members of the house in the proposed session.

The state government must also find the actual reasons if any of the members fail to attend the session.

The leader of the Congress legislators’ party in the state assembly said that there would certainly be a way for ending the prevailing crisis in a peaceful manner.

Searching for a way under the provisions of the Constitution of the country and bringing the parties in conflict to the negotiating table would be a right step.

However, in searching for the way for resolving the conflict, the territorial integrity of Manipur must not be compromised at any cost, Ibobi Singh asserted.
