A five-year-old girl and a woman sustained serious injuries after they were attacked by a wild elephant in the Gasuapara border region in Meghalaya on July 30, an official said on July 31.
The herd of elephants had come over from neighbouring Bangladesh and entered Cherengpara village in South Garo Hills district.
“On seeing the wild elephants, the duo ran helter-skelter. One of the elephants chased and attacked them causing grievous injuries,” an official said.
Both injured persons have been admitted at Tura Maternity Hospital.
Elephants from Garo Hills and Bangladesh often “cross over” the India-Bangladesh border not only in search of food but are also lured in by the scent of local brew.
