Union minister for Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal on September 1 said prime minister Narendra Modi has allocated Rs 3.69 lakh crore for the development of the Northeast region in the past nine years.

“The BJP government wants to expedite growth of the land-locked Northeast region and so the emphasis has been on developing the connectivity and the communication sector,” he told reporters on the sidelines of programme organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in Shillong.

Sonowal said that prime minister Modi has taken development of the Northeast as one of the top priorities for the NDA government.

“To expedite development the central government has allocated Rs 3.69 lakh crore for the region in the past nine years,” the former Assam chief minister said.

During the past nine years the road network in the region has almost doubled from about 8,480 km to 16,000 km. The number of airports has also doubled during this period while the rail network is being increased.

Moreover, 1,350 projects worth Rs 15,760 crore are at different stages of implementation in the region.

Meanwhile, during the ABVP-organised programme U Tirot Sing Best Students award, the Union minister said: “The yuva shakti is the maha shakti that can transform a nation to become successful, strong and sustainable.”

He urged parents, students, and teachers are the three most powerful pillars of the academic ecosystem. For the love of our country, we must work together to make our beautiful and rich northeast transform into the new engine of economic growth.
