A person was shot dead while 50 others sustained critical injuries in an attack by armed miscreants at Pallel in Kakching district on September 8.

News agency UNI quoted police sources saying that the deceased, identified as Jiten, and five others who were at Pallel were shot at. Jiten received injuries to his head and succumbed to his injuries.

Heavy firing continued, and over 50 people were injured, the UNI report said.

Most of the victims were rushed to Jeevan Hospital in Kakching.

“People from nearby areas assembled and protested the attack, and they tried to march towards the area from where the firing started. They were stopped by the Assam Rifles, as most of them were women and unarmed,” the report said.

Thoubal and Kakching district Apunba Lup (TAKDAL) has called a public curfew on September 8 and 9 to protest the failure of the state to control the Manipur crisis.

Manipur chief secretary Vineet Joshi issued an appeal to TAKDAL to withdraw the curfew.
