Sikkim chief minister PS Tamang visited flood-affected Dikchu Old Bazaar area on October 8 and took stock of the situation. The chief minister inspected 11 houses which were damaged by floods occurring since October 4.
Chief minister Tamang also visited the Dikchu dam site. Speaking to the media, Tamang said: “I visited the disaster-stricken area in Dikchu to assess the damages. Immediate relief of Rs 50,000 was provided to each affected family
He further assured support from the government once the assessment of damages is completed. He said that rescue work is ongoing with the lifting of the stranded tourists by choppers, and 22 members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have left for Mangan.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police rescued 56 civilians via zip line from Chungthang. Six others were rescued from the tunnel, Sikkim Urja Ltd Dam, Chungthang.
According to the latest report on population affected and the extent of damage caused due to floods in Sikkim, so far the number of human lives lost is 33, affected 60870; people missing 105; injured 26; damaged houses 1655; persons rescued 2563; evacuated 2707; relief camps opened 28; inmates in relief camps 6847; livestock lost 2380; bridges 14.
The road has been restored from Singtam to Rangpo and Melli, and the restoration work is likely to continue if landslides do not hit due to expected rain.
