Arunachal GI products showcased at 42nd India International Trade Fair in Delhi

Three indigenous products from Arunachal Pradesh – Yak Churpi, Khamti rice and Tangsa textile – are being showcased during the ongoing India International Trade Fair (IITF), 2023, an annual event organized by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) from November 14 to 27, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

Yak Churpi, Khamti rice and Tangsa textile have been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the GI registry recently.

GI tag is the indicative of the unique traditional knowledge of the specific region and community and protects it. With this, it provides better opportunity for generating livelihood and income through expanding both the national and international marketability of the product by assured authenticity and quality products supplied to consumer.

The Arunachal Pradesh Yak Churpi is a fermented home-made, casein-based cottage cheese-like product prepared from raw skimmed and fermented yak milk of the Arunachali yak breed. Owing to its uniqueness and potential for socio-economic upliftment of its producers, ICAR-NRC on Yak, Dirang, under the guidance of director Mihir Sarkar, took the task of registering this product. Sarkar considers GI tag of Yak Churpi to be a boon for the yak rearing community, which will help increase the accessibility, authenticity and marketability of the product.

Khamti rice is a chewy sticky rice variety cultivated in the Namsai region of Arunachal Pradesh by the Khamti tribe farmers. The rice is unique and used by the locals for making various traditional delicacies.

The Tangsa textile is the traditional craft product of Tangsa tribe of eastern Arunachal Pradesh and they are known for their unique exotic designs and vibrant colors reflecting the cultural richness of the region.

This year the theme IITF is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: United by Trade”. Almost 3,500 exhibitors from India and abroad have participated in this mega event to showcase their products.
