Four persons were killed and three others injured when unknown armed miscreants resorted to firing at Lilong in Thoubal district of Manipur on January 1.

To control the situation, curfew was imposed at Thoubal, Imphal East and Imphal West districts of Manipur on January 1.

“Due to developing law and order condition in the district and to prevent any untoward incidents and loss of life and property, and further as a precautionary measure, the curfew relaxation order dated December 31 stands cancelled and full curfew is imposed in all areas of Imphal West district with immediate effect,” said an order issued by the district administration.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace. He said actions will be taken up against all those who were involved in the incident at Lilong.

Security was beefed up at Lilong to control the situation.

Media reports said some armed persons demanded money from an individual and a confrontation ensued. The armed persons fled away by firing in which four persons died. The vehicles used by those who demanded money were burnt by a mob.

Since May 3, 2023, Manipur has been experiencing ethnic violence leading to multiple deaths, injuries and loss of properties.
