In a successful joint operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police, in conjunction with Karimganj district police, seized contraband drugs with an estimated market value of Rs 100 crores in Karimganj district on January 9.

Security personnel, in the course of the operation, apprehended four individuals, recovering a total of 5.1 kg of heroin and 64,000 Yaba tablets. Additionally, four packets of foreign-brand cigarettes were discovered and confiscated.

A combined team comprising STF and Karimganj district police, led by STF DIG Partha Sarathi Mahanta and Karimganj district Superintendent of Police (SP) Partha Protim Das, initiated the operation in the Suprakandi area under Nilam Bazar police station.

STF DIG Partha Sarathi Mahanta stated that the team intercepted an SUV in the targeted area. “During the search, we recovered 5.1 kg of heroin and 64,000 Yaba tablets. Four packets of foreign cigarettes have also been found and seized. We have also arrested four people,” mentioned Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

The arrested individuals were identified as Nur Ahmed (driver) from Patharkandi in Karimganj district, and Zosangliani, Ramngheaka, and Lalchamliana, residents of Thenzawl in Mizoram.

“This is likely the highest drug seizure in Eastern India in terms of market value. The estimated worth of this seizure is at least Rs 100 crores in the market, where prices have risen due to continuous and effective operations and aggressive actions by Assam police,” added Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
