ANI Photo | Assam: Policeman slips from boat, drowns in Brahmaputra river

A tragic incident unfolded in the South Salmara Mankachar district of Assam on January 7, where a policeman lost his life by drowning in the Brahmaputra River. The unfortunate event occurred in the Kasharipara Char area, situated along the Assam-Bangladesh border, as a police team was en route to the Bondihana area via boat.

According to Superintendent of Police Horen Tokbi, the purpose of the journey was to conduct an awareness campaign against child marriage and illegal drugs in the remote Bondihana area. The team, consisting of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) HQ, DSP Probationer, and a 5-6 member escort party, faced a tragic turn of events at Kasharipara in Brahmaputra.

“While navigating through Kasharipara, one of our policemen, identified as Kushal Kalita, slipped from the boat and fell into the river. Despite immediate efforts by locals who jumped in and threw a life jacket, he unfortunately drowned,” explained Horen Tokbi. The Superintendent of Police expressed sorrow over the incident and promptly informed the Border Security Force (BSF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and senior officials.

The recovery of Kushal Kalita’s body has taken place, and the family has been notified. Plans are underway for a post-mortem examination. However, the service rifle of the deceased policeman is yet to be recovered. The incident serves as a sombre reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel in carrying out their duties, even in remote and challenging terrains.
