Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma voiced apprehensions on January 30 regarding the gross enrolment ratio in Assam, stating that it does not align with the significant investments made in the higher education system. Addressing a “Review Meeting on Progress of Implementation of NEP 2020 in Higher Educational Institutions of Assam,” organized by Raj Bhawan, Assam, and the State Government’s Higher Education Department, Sarma emphasized the need for a holistic approach to enhance the gross enrolment ratio.

Despite substantial investments over the past decade, Sarma revealed that the state’s gross enrolment is stuck in the 17-18 percent range. He stressed the importance of making higher education more accessible and affordable for all eligible individuals, irrespective of their socioeconomic status.

During the event, Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria for his role in organizing the review meeting. The Governor has been actively pushing for the implementation of the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the state.

Sarma hinted at the possibility of introducing a new scholarship system for eligible students pursuing higher education. He proposed that higher educational institutions designate a “Director of Students’ Welfare” to ensure the campuses become centres for students’ well-being.

The Chief Minister urged vice-chancellors of universities in the state to act as role models in leadership and welfare. He emphasized the importance of eradicating nepotism and favouritism from educational institutions, calling for fair recruitment to fill vacancies.

Addressing government officials and heads of educational institutions, Himanta Biswa Sarma advocated for a uniform academic calendar and the formulation of institutional development plans that align with contemporary educational demands. He stressed the optimal deployment of resources and reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting female education.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Education Advisor Noni Gopal Mahanta, and Additional Chief Secretary VS Samal were also present at the event.
