Arunachal Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone as 12 distinct products from the region have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags. This brings the total number of indigenous products in Arunachal Pradesh with this prestigious recognition to an impressive 20, the highest among the North Eastern states. Among the products granted GI tags are Apatani Textile, Monpa Textile, Nyishi Textile, Monpa handmade paper, Adi Textile, Singpho Phalap (Singpho Tea), Galo Textile, Adi Apong, Dao (sword), Angnyat Millet, Marua Apo (Marua millet beverage), and Tai Khamti Textile.

This accomplishment reflects the dedication of local communities in preserving traditional and unique products, showcasing the rich social and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his delight over the development on the micro-blogging site X, stating that this is a momentous milestone for the state. He highlighted that the total of 20 products now bearing the coveted GI Tag sets Arunachal Pradesh apart from other Northeastern states, including Assam.

The achievement is a recognition of the diligent efforts of diverse communities in Arunachal Pradesh to preserve their unique products and traditions with pride. Over the past two years, NABARD has actively supported the GI registration process, collaborating with Rajni Kant, a Padma Shri awardee and specialist in the field. NABARD’s Itanagar Regional Office expressed commitment to continuing the partnership with the state government, focusing on supporting additional products to be brought under the GI umbrella. This dedication aligns to foster the growth and recognition of indigenous products, contributing to the socio-economic development of Arunachal Pradesh.
