Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on January 15 the establishment of the Northeast’s first Pesticides Residue Analysis Laboratory, a pioneering initiative to be located at Selesih near Aizawl. The laboratory, situated within the College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry at the Central Agriculture University, is funded under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).

The laboratory, set to be a state-of-the-art facility, aims to address challenges related to pesticide residue and analysis. The funding for this pioneering project has been approved under the RKVY, demonstrating the commitment to agricultural innovation in the region.

Chief minister Lalduhoma emphasized the significance of the laboratory, highlighting its potential benefits not only for Mizoram but also for neighbouring states. He expressed the government’s unwavering support for the project and commended the efforts of Lalnuntluangi Hmar, the College dean, and her team.

Funds allocated under the RKVY are expected to cover various aspects, including infrastructure development, procurement of cutting-edge equipment, and staffing requirements. The laboratory is poised to become a pivotal institution in addressing pesticide-related challenges and ensuring food safety.

Lalnuntluangi Hmar, the College dean, informed the chief minister about the proposed laboratory, highlighting its role in addressing issues related to pesticides and chemical contaminants. She assured that construction is already underway, and qualified personnel, including a Laboratory Scientist, have been appointed.

The laboratory, expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring food safety and monitoring chemical residues, underscores Mizoram’s commitment to agricultural advancement. As part of the Central Agriculture University, the Selesih Veterinary College has become a key institution in the state, providing quality education in horticulture and related fields.

Established in Selesih, the College accommodates students from Mizoram and beyond, offering 85 undergraduate seats, 16 master’s degree course departments, and 10 doctorate departments. This initiative reflects Mizoram’s dedication to combining education, research, and practical applications to address contemporary challenges in agriculture and ensure a sustainable and safe food supply.
