Several groups meet Manipur governor on law and order situation in Moreh

Representatives of Ima Market and Imagi Meira called on Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on January 17 evening and informed her on the law and order situation in Moreh.

The group “sternly” urged the governor to give the charge of unified command to the chief minister of Manipur and also requested for sending additional state forces to the border town to subside the aggravated situation, a statement from the Raj Bhavan said.

Later in the evening, former chief minister, Okram Ibobi Singh along with other Congress leaders called on the governor and briefed on the damage of public properties and loss of many innocent lives since the outbreak of the “ethnic strife” in May last year and also informed on the violence in Moreh, the Raj Bhavan note added.

They conveyed that the public in Thoubal areas have announced to march towards Moreh if additional state forces are not deployed and the inaction of the central forces. The Congress team also urged the governor for her immediate intervention to control the situation.

Governor Anusuiya Uikey heard their grievances and said that she was informed of the stringent security arrangements that have been put in place, and more central security forces will be sent by January 18 morning.

She appealed to the visiting team to co-operate and support every step taken up to restore peace and normalcy in the state.

Earlier, M Tombi, president of Shiv Sena, Manipur Unit along with 7 others, called on the governor and discussed about the “continuous unrest situation” in Manipur. The team further urged the governor on the changeover of the unified command chairmanship to the state government. They also requested that the prime minister and the home minister visit Manipur and bring amicable solution between the communities in conflict that started since May, 2023.

The governor stated her empathy towards the concerns and problems faced by the people due to the unrest and suggested for concerted efforts to restore peace and normalcy soon.

COCOMI on deteriorating situation

The Co-coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the border town, Moreh.

Addressing media in Imphal, COCOMI convener Jitendra Ningomba said that despite the presence of adequate central forces, the law and order situation in the border town, Moreh, has totally collapsed.

He insisted that the central government and the state government must make their intentions clear to the public, as “there is no effective measure taken by the government”.
