Tripura reported its initial COVID-19 fatality following the identification of the new variant, JN 1, according to officials.

India documented 475 fresh COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, accompanied by a slight decline in the number of active cases, as per data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, National Centre for Disease Control on January 9 morning.

The nation also registered six COVID-19 related deaths, with three reported in Karnataka, two in Chhattisgarh, and one in Assam, according to the data posted at 8 am January 9.

The active cases have decreased to 3,919, marking a reduction of 83 since Monday morning. The number of recoveries has risen to 4,44,81,893, with an increase of 552 since yesterday. The total COVID-19 cases stand at 4,50,19,267, rising by 475 since Monday, while the death toll is 5,33,402.

A total of 32,107 tests were conducted on January 8, as reported by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The country reported a total of 819 cases of the COVID-19 JN.1 subvariant from 12 states until January 8. Maharashtra leads with 250 cases, followed by Karnataka (199), Kerala (148), Goa (49), Gujarat (36), Andhra Pradesh (30), Rajasthan (30), Tamil Nadu (26), Telangana (26), Delhi (21), Odisha (3), and Haryana (1).
