In a significant move aimed at celebrating the rich agricultural heritage of Assam, the state government has officially declared Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon) as the state fruit. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the landmark announcement on February 12, highlighting the unique aroma and antioxidant properties of the indigenous lemon variety that has long enriched local cuisines across the region.

“With today’s announcement, it is set to shine on the global fruit map, boosting self-dependency & production,” stated CM Sarma, underscoring the potential of Kaji Nemu to garner global recognition and contribute to enhancing self-sufficiency in fruit production within the state.

Kaji Nemu, renowned for its distinct flavour and nutritional benefits, holds a cherished place in Assam’s culinary traditions. The decision to accord it the prestigious status of state fruit is expected to not only elevate its stature but also promote its cultivation and consumption both domestically and internationally.

The move comes as part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to recognize and promote indigenous agricultural produce, fostering economic growth and sustainability in Assam’s agricultural sector.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence that the declaration of Kaji Nemu as the state fruit would further strengthen the state’s identity and contribute to its agricultural prosperity.

This significant development is poised to bolster the prominence of Assam’s agricultural produce on a global scale, while also preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage associated with indigenous fruits like Kaji Nemu.
