During the question hour in the Assam Assembly on February 8, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government would take firm action against those responsible for irregularities in providing school uniforms and mid-day meals to students.

Sarma stated that the government would initiate police cases and stringent measures following the Lok Sabha elections, addressing allegations of anomalies across the state in the distribution of school uniforms and mid-day meals.

“Every year, we allocate funds for uniforms. During my visits to various districts, I observed disparities in the quality of school uniforms. While some were satisfactory, others were of poor standards,” he remarked.

Highlighting the discrepancy in the utilization of uniform funds, Himanta Biswa Sarma urged all MLAs to assess the quality of uniforms in schools within their constituencies and provide feedback. “If you encounter C-grade uniforms, please notify us promptly,” he urged.

Emphasizing the need to eradicate irregularities in the education system, Sarma outlined plans to form public committees post the Lok Sabha elections to ensure the provision of quality uniforms and hygienic mid-day meals to students.

“We will launch a special mission to rectify the system. This time, we will not hesitate to lodge FIRs against those involved in irregularities. Action will be initiated after the Lok Sabha elections,” Sarma affirmed.

The issue was raised by AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam in response to BJP legislator Dharmeswar Konwar’s inquiry about irregularities in the mid-day meal scheme.
