ANI Photo | Manipur: Mob attempts to storm SP office, internet suspended

A tumultuous scene unfolded in Churachandpur, Manipur, as a mob of approximately 300-400 individuals made a brazen attempt to storm the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) on February 15. Reports from the Manipur Police detailed the disturbing events, indicating that the agitated crowd resorted to hurling stones and engaging in other violent activities in an apparent effort to breach the SP’s office premises.

In response to the escalating situation, security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), were deployed to restore order. The Manipur Police confirmed the use of tear gas shells by the security personnel as a means to quell the unrest and prevent further escalation of violence.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the authorities swiftly implemented precautionary measures. The Manipur government invoked Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the affected area, exercising its legal authority to maintain public order and tranquillity. Additionally, in a move to curb the dissemination of potentially inflammatory content, mobile internet services were temporarily suspended in the Churachandpur district for a period of five days, commencing from 1:40 AM on February 16, 2024.

An official statement issued by the Manipur government underscored the rationale behind the imposition of such measures. It expressed concerns regarding the possibility of anti-social elements exploiting social media platforms to propagate incendiary material, including images, posts, and video messages, which could exacerbate tensions and pose significant threats to public safety and communal harmony.

The order further emphasized the imminent danger posed by the dissemination of false rumours and inflammatory content, which could potentially lead to loss of life, damage to public and private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquillity.

As the situation remains fluid, authorities continue to closely monitor developments in Churachandpur, while the enforcement of Section 144 and the temporary suspension of mobile internet services aim to mitigate the risks associated with the dissemination of provocative content and maintain law and order in the region.
