Manipur's Inner Imphal constituency Congress candidate Angomcha Bimol Akoijam

Congress candidate from Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, is under threat, Manipur Congress president K Meghachandra has informed chief electoral officer Pradeep Kumar Jha and state DGP Rajiv Singh.

Meghachandra said that on March 28 at around 3 pm, some unknown persons came to the residence of the Congress candidate and asked about him. They asked the family members of Akoijam to tell him to come to Kombirei Garden on March 29.

The unidentified persons repeatedly visited the residence of the candidate and warned him not to disobey their order.

After the incident, the candidate himself and the Congress legal department informed the chief electoral office, Manipur and DGP and demanded for necessary security measures.

As there was no response, a team of Congress MLAs visited the CEO and the DGP on March 29.

Considering the seriousness of incident, the state Congress president made an appeal on March 30 to provide adequate security to the candidate.

Six candidates remained in the fray for the 1-Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency seat. They are Rajkumar Somendro Singh alias Kaiku (Manipur People’s Party – MPP); Moirangthem Totomshana Nongshaba (Rashtriya Janhit Sangharsh Party – RJSP); Maheshwar Thounaojam (Republican Party of India- Athawale – RPI–A); Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh (BJP); Angomcha Bimol Akoijam (Congress) and Haorungbam Sarat Singh (Independent).

Four candidates have filed the papers for 2-Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary constituency. They are Alfred Kanngam S Arthur (Congress); Kachui Timothy Zimik (Naga People’s Front); Alyson Abonmai (Independent) and S Kho John (Independent).

Election for Inner Manipur will be held on April 19 and the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency elections will be held in two phases on April 19 and April 29.
