Senior leader of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Barpeta Lok Sabha MP, Abdul Khaleque, on March 15 resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party after he was denied a ticket to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Khaleque sent his resignation letter to All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge. In his resignation letter to the party’s national president, Abdul Khaleque raised certain allegations against state Congress president Bhupen Bora and party general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh.

In his resignation letter, he said: “As a member of the Congress party, I have served the party for the last 25 years as the leadership wanted. The party leadership took me into confidence and entrusted me with the responsibility of Assam and other states.”

“Recently, I have felt that the attitude and approach of the party has been destroyed by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and the general secretary of All India Congress Committee in charge of Assam. Looking at the situation, I feel the time has come for me to leave the party. Therefore, I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect,” he added.

Khaleque’s decision came after the Congress party chose Deep Bayan, state Seva Dal chief, as their candidate for the Barpeta constituency.

Several Congress leaders from the state have left the grand old party ahead of Lok Sabha elections. This comes two weeks after Congress working president Rana Goswami resigned from his post and primary membership of the party.
