Lurinjyoti Gogoi

Dibrugarh Lok Sabha candidate and Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s campaign got a boost with Communist Party of India (Marxist) announcing the party’s support to defeat Union minister and BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal.

CPI (M) state secretary Suprakash Talukdar announced the party’s support to the Congress-backed Gogoi who is challenging Sarbananda Sonowal.

Sarbananda Sonowal (BJP), Lurinjyoti Gogoi (AJP), and Manoj Dhanowar of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are in the fray for the Dibrugarh parliamentary seat.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Talukdar said CPI (M) will campaign vigorously in support of Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

“During Sonowal’s tenure as chief minister of Assam, he did not speak out against the CAA. Though five Assamese youths lost their lives in the anti-CAA protests in Assam. Sonowal did not visit the families of these martyred youth to pay homage. Therefore, the CPI (M) is determined to defeat Sonowal in the election,” he said.

“After the first phase of polling, the party will decide to extend its support to candidates in other constituencies to defeat the BJP candidates,” he added.

CPI (M) has decided to contest only the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat out of 14 parliamentary seats in Assam.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that Sarbananda Sonowal will win the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat by a margin of over three lakh votes.
