Unidentified armed miscreants resorted to firing during a meeting that was addressed by former Congress MLA Alfred Kanggam Arthur at TK Woodland resort, Paorei Shirui village in Ukhrul district of Manipur on March 18.

No one was injured in the firing. However, there was complete chaos as those attending the meeting ran helter-skelter.

Manipur Congress president K Meghachandra said Alfred was addressing the villagers when some people fired towards the venue. Alfred is seeking a Congress ticket to contest from the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat.

Meghachandra said it was unfortunate that a political consultative meeting was disturbed. Such incidents will now be witnessed by people who want to disturb the normal democratic electoral process, he said.

“Such attacks will make democracy meaningless and the government should ensure that law and order is maintained,” he said.

He added that the state security agency also asked the Congress party not to organize meetings. “If people can’t exercise their political rights, democracy will be meaningless,” he added.
