The Mizoram assembly on March 7 witnessed a groundbreaking milestone in its history as Baryl Vanneihsangi assumed control of the session, etching her name as the first woman to do so in the state.

This historic event not only marks a significant stride towards gender inclusivity in governance but also stands as a testament to the progressive spirit of Mizoram’s political landscape.

In recognition of this momentous occasion, Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma lauded the historic feat, emphasizing its profound significance for the state’s democratic journey. Lalduhoma underscored the importance of such strides towards gender equality and inclusivity in governance, highlighting the pivotal role women play in shaping the socio-political fabric of Mizoram.

“Today marks a significant historical landmark for the Mizoram Assembly as Ms. Baryl Vanneihsangi, MLA, assumed control of the session, becoming the first woman to do so. This moment underscores a momentous stride towards gender inclusivity in governance,” Lalduhoma wrote on social media platform X.

Baryl Vanneihsangi’s ascendancy to the helm of the assembly session reflects the ongoing efforts to empower women in leadership roles and dismantle traditional gender barriers in politics. Her leadership not only symbolizes progress but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of women leaders in Mizoram and beyond.

Baryl Vannaisangi won the Mizoram assembly election from the Aizawl South-III constituency, becoming the youngest woman MLA in the state. She is a member of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).

Vanneihsangi has previously worked as a corporator in Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), as per the affidavit in the Election Commission.

The 33-year-old legislator previously worked as a TV presenter and radio jockey before shifting gears to politics. She has been into radio since 2015 and then shifted to digital media to work as a TV presenter for a local news channel.

In 2014, she earned a Master of Arts degree in history from North Eastern Hill University in Shillong.
