Mizoram governor Hari Babu Kambhampati administered the oath of office to Lalmalsawma, a retired IAS officer, as the new chairperson of Mizoram Lokayukta at a ceremony held in the governor’s house on March 18. Chief minister Lalduhoma, speaker Lalbiakzama, and members of the council of ministers were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Born on March 1st, 1958, in Gaya, Bihar, Lalmalsawma brings a rich tapestry of administrative experience to his new position. Joining the Union Territories Cadre of IAS in 1983, he has served in various capacities across Delhi, Goa, Mizoram, and the Central government, overseeing critical portfolios in finance, education, health, and welfare, among others.
Lalmalsawma’s illustrious career includes notable roles such as Director in the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Chief Electoral Officer of Mizoram, where he played a pivotal role in electoral processes and constituency delimitation. His influence transcends national borders, having been appointed as an International Observer during the Palestine elections in 2015.
Notably, Lalmalsawma served as chief secretary of Mizoram from November 2014 to February 2018, earning recognition as the most upright officer in the state, as per a poll conducted by Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the principal student body.
After 35 years of dedicated service, Lalmalsawma retired from the IAS in February 2018, concluding a distinguished career marked by integrity and commitment to public service. As he assumes his new role as Chairperson of Mizoram Lokayukta, his leadership pledges to uphold the principles of accountability and justice within the state.
